Just last month General Mills announced a commitment to further reduce sugar in cereals advertised to kids under 12 to single-digit grams of sugar per serving. Additionally, the company has been increasing key nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, and providing whole grain. Having survived early morning dilemmas as a working mother, I was excited to share the news about General Mills. To understand my excitement, let me give you a little family history. My mother was a stay at home mom. Her children ate a home cooked breakfast every morning… except for Saturday. Cartoons and sweet cereal; a treat for us kids and a break for mom. I am thankful that my mother taught us the importance of a good breakfast. While I may not have cooked a meal in the morning, I did insist the boys ate a good breakfast. Of course, the breakfast tradition of cartoons and sweet cereal on Saturday morning continued in my house too! My boys, both grown men now, still enjoy cereal with breakfast and as a snack too. Breakfast, Baking, & Saving was inspired in part, by that very news. And now General Mills has me really excited!! I received an opportunity to share the Big G Whole Grain Awareness Challenge and a “Grains of Goodness” gift pack here. Why all the whole grain hype? Read on to learn more about whole grains and how you can win a “Grains of Goodness” Gift Pack.
My blog spark and General Mills provided me with this awesome “Grains of Goodness” gift pack – 2 VIP coupons for Big G cereal products, a breakfast chiller, a large cereal mug, and a tote bag- plus I received an educational fact sheet on the health benefits of whole grains, a re-usable laminated tally card to track my families whole grain intake. If that’s not enough, one of my lucky readers has a chance to receive the same Grains of Goodness gift pack! Did you know that studies have found that a diet rich in whole grain can be helpful in maintaining a healthy heart, managing weight and may also reduce the risk for diabetes and certain types of cancer? As for nutrients, whole grains contain carbohydrates, B vitamins, Trace minerals such as Iron, zinc, and copper, Fiber, Phytonutrients, antioxidants, magnesium, and plant sterols that may lower cholesterol. In a national survey, 91 percent of Americans said they want to incorporate more whole grain foods into their diets. In fact, nine out of 10 people in the U.S. still do not eat the minimum recommended daily amount of whole grain (at least three servings, or 48 grams). Do you? Why not start keeping track of how many whole grains you eat to find out? We invite you to take the Whole Grain Awareness Challenge to put your whole grain knowledge to the test. The process takes about 30 seconds or so, and it’s fun as well as informative. I took the quiz and I’m a “whole grain diva”!
How to win the Grains of Goodness gift pack:
- Leave a comment telling me which Big G whole grain cereal you would purchase. Just look for the white check!
(This is mandatory for all entries to be counted.)
- For three additional entries, one for each comment:
Take the Whole Grain Awareness Challenge, come back and leave a comment telling me how you scored. Comment on any other post here and tell me why you chose that post. Follow me on twitter and comment with your twitter name.
Contest ends Saturday, March 13th at noon EST. One winner will be chosen via random.org. Winner will be notified by email, and posted here.
Hope you enjoyed learning more about the importance of whole grains and good luck!
