Aging in place a life experience

Aging in place a life experience

The great majority of older adults would prefer to live out their days in their own home. This is also known as aging in place. The key to successful aging in place is making the home safe and obtaining the right support before a health crisis or other emergency strikes. Often times this is not an option, leaving parents to rely on their children. This is our current situation.

The hardest part of this situation was convincing Dad he needed help. That task took us more than one year. The continued increase in the cost of living was the deciding factor for him. I found this rather unbelievable. To us, my siblings and my family, the most important factor was his ability to care for himself and his ever growing loneliness, neither of which he admitted to. At any rate, he finally moved in last week. The first step we took was to prepare in advance, a safe room that would feel like home.

Funny Friday – Sir?

Funny Friday – Sir?

Hearing a department store clerk address the lady as “Ma’am,”

four year old Jennifer asked what that meant.

“Ma’am is short for madam,” her mother replied. “It’s a polite way to address a woman.”

Jennifer asked what name Daddy would be called.

“Sir,” mother answered.

“Sir …” she thought for a moment, “that must be short for servant!”

“Send him out to by new spring plungers?” Yep that’s his job!

First on Google means…

Please, please help others understand how search sites are returned. I did a Google search for safe weight loss pills. Google returned about 11,800,000 results. The number one site listed was the Mayo Clinic. “The appeal of losing weight quickly is hard to resist. But do weight-loss pills and products lighten anything but your wallet? And are they a safe option … ” An institute such as this with a reputable website had the first position and thankfully so.

Beyond that were sites selling what they claim to be safe, effective, or fast acting weight loss pills. I wonder just how many people believe that the order of sites returned is equivalent to credibility.

Weight Loss Super Foods

Weight Loss Super Foods

Eat more of these foods and weigh less, sounds somewhat crazy. According to Self magazine, the right foods aid in dropping pounds by accelerating calorie burning and curbing cravings.

The top twenty weight loss super foods listed include steak, eggs, kale, oats, lentils, Goji berries, wild salmon, apples, buckwheat pasta, blueberries, almond butter, pomegranates, chilies, yogurt, quinoa, sardines, tarragon, Parmesan, avocado, and olive oil. Plenty of high fiber and high protein foods included however, the list is rather surprising to me.  A first glance the list appeared to be foods that supported weight gain not loss.

Hurricane season has officially begun

Hurricane season has officially begun

Hurricane season has officially begun! Residents of Florida and other hurricane prone areas will begin preparing for the season.

Recalling the season of 2004, according to Wikipedia, “The season was notable as one of the deadliest and most costly Atlantic hurricane seasons on record in the last decade, with at least 3,132 deaths and roughly $50 billion (2004 US dollars) in damage. The most notable storms for the season were the five named storms that made landfall in the U.S. state of Florida, three of them with at least 115 mph (185 km/h) sustained winds: Tropical Storm Bonnie, Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne. This is the only time in recorded history that four hurricanes affected Florida.”

Happy Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day

Memorial for the United States is a time to reflect and give thanks. Spending time with family, picnics and barbecues are the tradition on Memorial Day. This holiday was originally known as Decoration Day, and originated in the years following the Civil War. Then in 1971, Memorial Day was marked an official federal holiday.

One Marine described Memorial Day this way,”But to me, there is no better way to thank the men and women who have served our country than to enjoy the life of freedom and prosperity they fought for.” A beautiful analogy is it not.

Whatever you enjoy – have a barbecue, go for a drive, or buy one of those big fat discount cigars – engage in today to honor those who fought for our freedom!

Happy Memorial Day

Funny Friday – Phyllis Diller

Funny Friday – Phyllis Diller

Phyllis Diller is, in my opinion, the original domestic goddess and queen of one liners! Born to an insurance man in Ohio, I thought it most appropriate she kick off  my Funny Friday!

Phyllis Diller – Age:
Old age is when the liver spots show through your gloves.
My mother-in-law had a pain beneath her right breast. It turned out to be a trick knee.
You know you’re old if your walker has an airbag
You know you’re old if they have discontinued your blood type.

Funny Friday – Insurance jokes

Funny Friday – Insurance jokes

When men handle insurance affairs:

  • ‘You ought to feel highly honored,’ said the businessman to the life insurance agent, ‘so far today I have had my secretary turn away insurance quotes from seven insurance agents.’ ‘Yes, I know,’ replied the agent, ‘I am them.’
  • Life insurance agent to would-be client: ‘Don’t let me frighten you into a hasty decision. Sleep on it tonight sir. If you wake in the morning, give me a call then and let me know.’
  • Three guys are fishing in the Caribbean. One guy says, ‘I had a terrible fire; lost everything. Now the insurance company is paying for everything and that’s why I’m here.’The second guy says, ‘I had a terrible explosion; lost everything. Now the insurance company is paying for everything and that’s why I’m here.’  The third guy says, ‘What a coincidence. I had a terrible flood; lost everything. Now the insurance company is paying for everything and that’s why I’m here.  ‘ The other guys turned to him with confusion and asked, ‘Flood? How do you start a flood?’

Early work experiences develop lasting skills

Often times, early work experiences develop lasting skills. Growing up, I worked a variety of jobs. Most were service industry jobs, specifically food service. Beginning as a kitchen aide in a small, private senior home, I learned the importance of planning. The head dietitian scheduled the meals two weeks in advance. Simple desserts such as jello, junkets, or pudding were prepared in bulk, enough to fill one week of meals. It was a rather relaxed atmosphere as long as you arrived when scheduled and completed the planned tasks on time.

How Mom survives in a household of men!

Are you a Mom of all boys? If your answer is yes, you have to check out the interview with author Sharon O’Donnell! My boys are grown now however, had her book been published while I was raising them, I would have bought it in an instant! This is too real and very funny!

To give you some insight, this is an excerpt from the front page of her website, momsofboys.org: “Lost in a world of bathroom humor, sports, and Mt. Everest-sized piles of laundry, moms often lose their identity as a woman and their sanity as a human being. Moms of Boys have long forgotten what it’s like to go to a ‘girls’ movie or to the theatre or ballet or to have time to paint their toenails or even shave their legs.”

4G iPhone for Dad, maybe?

4G iPhone for Dad, maybe?

The new 4G Iphone is expected to be released in early June. The phones will ship later in the month. Walmart has ads showing the roll back of 3G iPhone prices. It’s funny, according to Wired.com, AT&T’s CEO Ralph da la Vega said during an investor conference that his company was not fazed by the possibility of a Verizon iPhone. Apparently, a Morgan Stanley analyst says somewhere around 70% of Verizon customers would upgrade to the new iPhone without having to switch their network. No concerns from AT&T, yeah right.
